De 7816 meter hoge Nanda devi wordt omgeven door een gigantische cirkel van 6000 meter pieken. Het is een prachtig berggebied in het noordindiase Gharwal met vele trekkings mogelijkheden. De experimenten rond Joshimath in 2005 werden bemoeilijkt door overvloedige sneeuw ( voorjaar) en permitproblemen ( najaar). Daarom zullen ook de tochten in 2006 hier en daar nog een experimenteel karakter hebben. De weelderige bossen, de weiden en terrassen rond de dorpen, de vriendelijke bewoners, het uitzicht en de vele kenmerken van de Hindoe cultuur zorgen voor een grote variatie op deze reis.

Geschiedenis
In de jaren 20 en 30 van de vorige eeuw was het een populair gebied onder Engelse bergbeklimmers. Nepal was gesloten voor buitenlanders en in Tibet mocht alleen op de Everest geklommen worden. India, waar ook Pakistan toe behoorde, was Engels grondgebied en vrij bereisbaar. In 1936 stonden de eerste klimmers op de top van de Nanda Devi, een hoogterecord wat tot de beklimming van de Annapurna I in 1951 stand hield.

Twee trektochten
Via Delhi reizen we naar Rishikesh in Gharwal. Ter acclimatisatie maken we een 12-daagse trek tussen de Pindar River en de Dhauli Ganga, met als hoogste punt 4600 meter. De tweede 6-daagse trektocht gaat naar het Nanda Devi basiskamp van de 1936 expeditie. Of de permit ook werkelijk afgegeven wordt is op dit moment nog niet zeker. In dat geval maken we een alternatieve trektocht ten noorden van het massief.
